 - 京焼 KYO-YAKI,  清水焼 KIYOMIZU-YAKI -

Tea Bowls with variety of glaze and skillful hand-painting in Japanese tradition.

Teezeremonie Schalen mit verschiedenen Glasuren und handwerkliches Meisterstück in japanischer Tradition.

Kyō-yaki is a general term for all pottery created in Kyoto.

In the past, people used many different words for different kinds of pottery. Kiyomizu-yaki used to only mean pottery made in the Gojozaka area, along the route to Kiyomizudera-temple. Accordingly, all pottery now made in Kyoto is referred to as “Kyō-/Kiyomizu-yaki.”

Since the clay of raw material cannot be easily found in Kyoto, potters transported the soil from other areas, blended them independently, and created works full of individuality. As Kyoto was the producing area, as well as the biggest market, potters in Kyoto improved their skills and aesthetics based on the requirements and criticisms from masters of tea ceremony, aristocracies, samurai class and wealthy townspeople. Such spirits still have been encouraging potters in Kyoto.

As the result Kyoto ware has been evaluated fine quality with its delicate and charm sensibility, and the great variety. Even now, they continue to make works combining a comfortable feeling with an excellent design, such as a light finish familiar to the hands, or a pattern that contains the wishes of the four season’s flowers and a lucky omen. The individuality of each artist in the pottery is strong, and it can also be said that it is a feature.
