🔸Owl Symbolism Around the World

Owls have long been associated with magic and wizardry in Western mythology and is a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, education and heightened senses that many in the West are familiar with. But owls also hold special meaning in Japan and have been considered a lucky bird too.

Eulen werden in der westlichen Mythologie seit langem mit Magie und Zauberei in Verbindung gebracht und sind vielen Menschen im Westen als Symbol für Weisheit, Wissen, Bildung und geschärfte Sinne bekannt. Auch in Japan haben Eulen eine besondere Bedeutung und gelten als Glücksvögel.

🔸The Symbolism of Owls in Japan

In Japan, owls are perceived to bring luck and offer protection from suffering. The reason can be found in the Japanese name for owl, "FUKURO" フクロウ (梟). If you write FUKURO in other kanji characters, it can have various positive meanings even though it is pronounced the same as "FUKURO";

福来朗  fuku rou : bring good luck to people

不苦労  fu kurou : no suffering/hardships, no worries

(知恵)袋  chie no fukuro:a wise person

Through this play on words, owls have attained different attributions and have become popular as engimono (縁起物) (Japanese for lucky charms).

In addition, the owl's head turns 180 degrees or more, which is a symbol of future prospects and foresight and has the meaning of prosperity in business.

In Japan gelten Eulen als Glücksbringer und als Schutz vor Leid. Der Grund dafür liegt in der japanischen Bezeichnung für Eule, "FUKURO" フクロウ (梟). Wenn man FUKURO in anderen Kanji-Zeichen schreibt, kann es verschiedene positive Bedeutungen haben, auch wenn es genauso ausgesprochen wird wie "FUKURO";

福来朗 fuku rou : den Menschen Glück bringen

不苦労 fu kurou : kein Leid/keine Mühen, keine Sorgen

(知恵)袋 chie no fukuro:eine weise Person
