Potter's teapot Hotta Takumi (Kenji Toen) entirely handcrafted.

 

This stunning pastel teapot and cups set has a round shape, and is made from white clay, with swirls of red, green, and yellow kneaded in using the Nerikomi technique. Made by Hotta Takumi (堀 田 拓 見), second generation potter of KENJI-Kiln (憲 児 陶 苑) in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture. Born in 1985, Hotta Takumi continues his father's practice of specialising in nerikomi wares.

 

The body was covered with pastel green soil, with round dot scooped out, revealing the marbled white colour underneath. This traditional dots pattern is called mizutama (水玉 - water drop).

Dieses  wunderschöne pastellfarbene Teeset hat eine runde Form und ist aus weißem Ton mit Wirbeln in Rot, Grün und Gelb, die mit der Nerikomi-Technik geknetet wurden. Hergestellt von Hotta Takumi (堀 田 拓 見), Töpfer der zweiten Generation des KENJI-Kiln (憲 児 陶 苑) in Tokoname City, Präfektur Aichi. Der 1985 geborene Hotta führt die Praxis seines Vaters fort, der sich auf Nerikomi-Waren spezialisiert hatte.

 

Der Körper war mit pastellgrüner Ton bedeckt, wobei runde Punkte ausgehöhlt waren, wodurch die marmorierte weiße Farbe darunter zum Vorschein kam. Dieses traditionelle Punktmuster wird Mizutama (水玉 - Wassertropfen) genannt.


Nerikomi - clay layering

Nerikomi is a decorative process established in Japan that involves stacking colored clay and then cutting it through the cross-section to reveal a pattern that can then be used as an applied decoration.

 

Plates of different clays colored with stains or oxides are stacked, folded, pressed into logs, cut into slices and arranged in a pot. In this way, the numerous stacked layers appear as fine, wavy lines that are embedded in a surrounding color in the finished object.

Nerikomi -Tonschichtung

Nerikomi ist ein dekorativer Prozess, der in Japan etabliert wurde und das Stapeln von farbigem Ton und das Anschließende Schneiden durch den Querschnitt beinhaltet, um ein Muster zu enthüllen, das dann als aufgebrachte Dekoration verwendet werden kann.

 

Platten aus verschiedenen Tonen oder Tone, die mit Flecken oder Oxiden gefärbt sind, werden gestapelt, gefaltet, in Baumstämme gepresst, in Scheiben geschnitten und zu einem Gefäß angeordnet. Auf diese Weise erscheinen die zahlreichen gestapelten Schichten als feine wellenförmige Linien, die in eine umgebende Farbe im fertigen Gefäß eingebettet sind.

* It is said that any astringency and bitterness found in Japanese green teas are adjusted by the reaction of the iron contained in Tokoname ware's red mud with the tannin of the tea, resulting in a delicious and mellow taste.

About the Artist

Tokoname (常滑) is located near Chubu International Airport in southern Nagoya, Aichi Prefcture. High quality earthenware has been produced here since the 12th century, and still now, Tokoname is a center of pottery production in Japan.

 

Tokoname is one of Japan's six most important ancient kiln towns - the others are Bizen (備前), Echizen (越前), Seto (瀬戸), Shigaraki (信楽) and Tanba (丹波) - had the largest output of ceramics of any kiln town in the Edo Period (1600-1868). 

 

In particular, Tokoname used to be the main production site for ceramic water pipes. In modern times, it is known around the world for its ornaments such as tea sets and beckoning cats.
