In Japan, cranes and tortoise are often represented in pairs and collectively called "tsuru-kame". They have been familiar to the Japanese people since ancient times as symbol of longevity and good fortune.
The detail of each plate is outstanding.
The plate of Crane:
Beautiful relief of crane's wings and gorgeous design with gold and silver colouring.
The plate of Tortoise:
The tortoise carapace is decorated with a hemp leaf pattern in silver. The hemp leaf is one of the traditional patterns favored as a very auspicious design because it grows straight and fast and is quite durable.
The reverse side of the plat:
Half faces of crane and tortoise are depicted on each side. The attention to detail and sense of style is evident.

It has been 400 years since Japanese porcelain production began in Arita, Saga prefecture. There are various types of pottery in Japan, but Arita has led the way for the pottery market as the birthplace of Japanese porcelain.
The KOURAKU KILN was establisched in the first year of Keio (1865) by the first Tokunaga Kosuke. He built the first kiln in Obo-yama, Arita Town. Since then, they have inherited their work without extinguishing the fire of the kiln for more than 100 years.
In 1958, a new kiln was built in Maruo, Arita, and now, they maintain the entire process from casting to unglazed kilns, paintings, main kilns, and aka-e kilns, consistently producing. The company is also committed to the development of original designs, pursuing further innovation at the same time as inheriting Arita's traditions. Kouraku Kiln aims to produce quality ceramics suitable for today’s lifestyles.
