A beautiful black teapot with carving-decoration handmade by the famed Studio Hōryū (宝龍) in Tokoname (Aichi prefecture). The name of "Kokudei (黒泥)" describes its dark color. 

 

This kyusu is made from a red natural clay (Japanese: Shudei 朱泥) which particularly enriched with natural iron-oxide. The color turns in the dark during the smoking process with charcoal or straw that follows the initial firing process. 

 

The wavy pattern is carved on the surface with a special master's knife, and the under color of the vermilion is revealed through the cutting pattern. This is a bold, elegant Kyusu created with the tradition of craftsmanship and the extremely careful production method.

 

Eine schöne schwarze Teekanne mit Schnitzdekoration, handgefertigt vom berühmten Studio Hōryū (宝龍) in Tokoname (Präfektur Aichi). Diese Teekanne heißt "Kokudei (黒泥)", beschreibt ihre dunkle Farbe.

 

Dieses Kyusu besteht aus einem roten Naturton (japanisch: Shudei 朱泥), der besonders mit natürlichem Eisenoxid angereichert ist. Die Oberfläche wird durch weiteres Brennen mit Holzkohle oder Stroh nach dem normalen Brennvorgang geschwärzt.

🔸常滑焼 TOKONAME-YAKI -  A tradition of quality

Tokoname (常滑) is located near Chubu International Airport in southern Nagoya, Aichi Prefcture. High quality earthenware has been produced here since the 12th century, and still now, Tokoname is a center of pottery production in Japan.

 

Tokoname is one of Japan's six most important ancient kiln towns - the others are Bizen (備前), Echizen (越前), Seto (瀬戸), Shigaraki (信楽) and Tanba (丹波) - had the largest output of ceramics of any kiln town in the Edo Period (1600-1868). 

 

In particular, Tokoname used to be the main production site for ceramic water pipes. In modern times, it is known around the world for its ornaments such as tea sets and beckoning cats.
