Tokoname Kyusu Teapot with Ash Glaze (Kaiyu or Haiyu)

 

A classic round teapot featuring a unique greenish sheen created by the traditional Kaiyu (also known as Haiyu, ash glaze) technique. During firing, natural wood ash melts into the surface, resulting in subtle variations in colour. Each piece is truly one of a kind.

 

 

Handcrafted by Master Eiichi Tsuchihira (ISSHIN Kiln), officially recognized as a “Traditional Craftsman of Tokoname-Yaki” by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Tokoname Kyusu Teekanne mit Ascheglasur (Kaiyu oder Haiyu)

 

Klassisch runde Teekanne mit einem einzigartigen, grünlich schimmernden Glanz, entstanden durch die traditionelle Kaiyu-Technik (auch Haiyu genannt, Ascheglasur). Beim Brennen schmilzt die natürliche Holzasche und erzeugt feine Farbvariationen. Jede Kanne ist ein Unikat.

 

 

Handgefertigt von Meister Eiichi Tsuchihira (ISSHIN-Gama), ausgezeichnet als „Traditioneller Handwerksmeister für Tokoname-Yaki“ vom japanischen Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Handel und Industrie.

About the Artist

Isshin Tōbō – Eiichi TSUCHIHIRA (一心陶房 - 土平栄一)

 

Born in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, in 1969.
1991 Studied at Iowa State University, USA.
1992 Graduated from the National Fisheries University.
1994 Completed a Master’s degree at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Miyazaki.
1996 Graduated from the Arita College of Ceramics.
In the same year, joined Isshin Tōbō.

 

In 2009, officially certified as a “Traditional Craftsman of Tokoname-yaki” by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan.

 

 

Born and raised in Tokoname, Eiichi Tsuchihira returned home after studying ceramics in various regions. He now continues the legacy of Isshin Tōbō, founded by his grandfather and father, as its third-generation potter.

Isshinn Tōbō – Eiichi TSUCHIHIRA (一心陶房 - 土平栄一)

 

1969 in Tokoname, Präfektur Aichi, geboren.

1992 Abschluss an der Fischereifachschule (Suizandai Gakkō).
1994 Abschluss des Masterstudiums an der Landwirtschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Miyazaki.

Im selben Jahr Eintritt in die Töpferei Isshin Tōbō.

 

2009 Anerkennung als „Traditioneller Handwerksmeister für Tokoname-yaki“ durch das Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Handel und Industrie Japans.

 

 

In Tokoname geboren und aufgewachsen, kehrte Eiichi Tshuchihira nach Studien in verschiedenen Regionen nach Hause zurück und übernahm als dritte Generation die Werkstatt Isshin Tōbō, die von seinem Großvater und Vater gegründet wurde.


🔸常滑焼 TOKONAME-YAKI -  A tradition of quality

Tokoname (常滑) is located near Chubu International Airport in southern Nagoya, Aichi Prefcture. High quality earthenware has been produced here since the 12th century, and still now, Tokoname is a center of pottery production in Japan.

 

Tokoname is one of Japan's six most important ancient kiln towns - the others are Bizen (備前), Echizen (越前), Seto (瀬戸), Shigaraki (信楽) and Tanba (丹波) - had the largest output of ceramics of any kiln town in the Edo Period (1600-1868). 

 

In particular, Tokoname used to be the main production site for ceramic water pipes. In modern times, it is known around the world for its ornaments such as tea sets and beckoning cats.
